INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

DESIGN OF TOYOTA COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

"CAN" bus, with multiple sub-buses, connects to OBD2 connector; most ECUs store their own DTCs (exceptions)
design is "fail safe" during "CAN" bus failure
public and proprietary commands
Proprietary commands require:
- $495 hardware (MongoosePro MFC)
- $55 (for 2day rental) of Toyota "Techstream Lite" software (Windows OS, only)
Public commands available for low cost:: (*= demo)
- *Bluetooth Generic Soliport ELM327(knockoff) ($15 from Amazon.com) to plug into the OBD2 connector
- *Android Torque App ($5 from Google Play) to provide the diagnostic software
- *(Nexus 7) Android smartphone or tablet, which is "paired" via Bluetooth to the ELM327
